Answer
.Take my comments below as someone who loves a good debate and certainly not an attack on anyones opinion. A difference of opinion yes an attack no. A good debate can only help us learn and help the originator of the question to clearly hear both sides and therefore get a better answer both my feelings on this as well as those oposing mine are opinions based on our experiences. brbr Autofocus is nice to have but not a gotta have. Yes it can make things easier sometimes but do people really think no action shots were ever taken in photography before there was autofocus. Did all those wonderful shots taken in war zone by photojournalist or on sports frields and at the olympics only start occuring in the last few years ? brbrYou can learn and many have learned to focus manually and use it with excellent results on action shots. If you want a split prism viewfinder you can get one for your D from katzeye but you can also use the digital rangefinder turn the barrel of the lens while looking through the viewfinder and when the little light at the bottom of your viewfinder lights up you are in focus, its really not harder to see a light then to line up a split image prism in a camera. I have done both. And the turning of the lens barrel is identical whether you are looking for the light or watching the split ring. In fact on older zooms we has some that were push pull zoom turn focus and watch the viewfinder so you might even have been pulling and turning and watching all at once yes when taking an action shot Most people that are naysayers of manual focus either do not really want to learn or never gave it a fair shot. I have shot sports football , basketball and martial arts , auto racing, and wildlife manually focusing and using AF . I have used panning techniques both with AF and without. Yes its a learned skill but most things in photography are. Yes AF is easier and at times very very convenient. I cannot and willnot argue that. But AF can also be fooled and focus on the wrong area depending on how you have the focus point set or what focus point aquires first. Its not a panacea. and an argument can be made that phase change autofocus used in dSLR is not accurate. We know its not as accurate as the contrast based autofocus used in some other cameras but phase change AF was chosen for dSLR because its much faster than contrast based. brbrAnd it is good that someone told the person who asked this question that it will not autofocus. It is something you would want to know before you buy it. So you decide yes or no with your eyes open ONLY AFs and AFi lenses will autofocus on the D. The mm lens mentioned is a great lens also, On the APSc it will do basically what a was on a full frame or mm film camera It will however have a little more depth of field at f. than the would so this may help with the shots you are taking. brbrIf you like AF more than yes get only AF lenses, Its valid to have an opinion that you feel thats better. but dont say its impossible to do otherwise just because you do not prefer to do it. say you prefer to do it and why. There are many things I cannot do or have not learned to do that are far from impossible. I could not even argue with someone who said that they felt the phot experience was better with AF as that is thier opinion brbrAdded Carolina Flyboy the e series lenses are a great idea for manual focus. They were one of the first Nikkor lenses to use plastic parts so at the time they got little respect but they are well built and have great optics But know going in that on the D you will not be able to use all modes and it will not meter. Still not a deal breaker and a great lens
